چکیده

The history of using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems for communication is rather brief. Prior to 1975, there were descriptions of nonspeaking individuals using simple letter boards, picture boards, and typewriters to communicate messages (Goldberg & Fenton, 1960; Goldstein & Cameron, 1952; McDonald & Schultz, 1973; Vicker, 1974). The early use of AAC systems was limited to a few individuals with physical handicaps or aphasia who had the ability to independently point to symbols. Several factors came together in the late 1970s that had a major impact on the development of AAC devices. In 1975, PL 94-142 was implemented, mandating that all handicapped children between 5 and 21 years of age be provided with a free public education. With the implementation of this law, nonspeaking individuals who previously had been excluded from the educational mainstream began receiving the attention of speech-language pathologists and educators. The development of microcomputer technology was the second factor that impacted the AAC field. Prior to the development of microcomputers, AAC devices were handmade electrical systems, or nonportable computer systems. Vanderheiden and Grilley (1977) offered an overview of electronic AAC devices that were available in the early 1970s. Many of these early AAC systems consisted of adaptations to electric typewriters, or were simplistic electronic scanning devices without printed or spoken output. The Canon Communicator was one of the first commercially available augmentative communication devices specifically designed for nonspeaking individuals. It was a small device that strapped to the user's wrist. A small touchpad with alphabet letters could be used to spell messages which were printed on a small strip printer. The Canon Communicator could only be used by individuals with sufficient spelling and fine motor abilities. A modified version of the device is still available commercially (see Appendix). The AutoCom was of one of the first computerbased electronic AAC systems that could

Design and evaluation of validity of an electronic alternative and augmentative communication system for Persian-speaking children

Introduction: Due to the high prevalence of communication disorders, augmentative and alternative communication methods are one the options ahead to solve the problems of these people. Since there are no complex tools for Persian-speaking children with communication disorders, we decided to design communication assistant software for these children that produces sound output. Materials and Meth...

Iranian Speech -Language Pathologists’ Awareness of Alternative and Augmentative Communication Methods

Objectives: Alternative and Augmentative communication ( AAC ) provides a means of effective communication to persons with severe impairments in speech comprehension and production. The aim of this study was to examine the awareness of Iranian speech-language pathologists (SLPs) of AAC services. Methods:  A total of 111 SLPs who were selected by convenience sampling took part in this cross-sec...

The role of word order in the interpretation of canonical and non-canonical graphic symbol utterances: A developmental study.

Graphic symbols are often used to represent words in Augmentative and Alternative Communication systems. Previous findings suggest that different processes operate when using graphic symbols and when using speech. This study assessed the ability of native speakers of French with no communication disorders from four age groups to interpret graphic-symbol sequences of varying length and canonicit...

Computer-Based Video Instruction to Teach the Use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication Devices for Ordering at Fast-Food Restaurants

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) provides a way for persons with limited or no verbal speech to communicate. Augmentative systems provide a means to enhance speech; alternative systems provide a substitution for speech (Quill, 2000). AAC includes unaided systems, such as manual signs and gestures; aided voice output systems; and aided nonvoice output systems, such as symbols and...

Augmentative and alternative communication supports for adults with autism spectrum disorders.

Many adults with autism spectrum disorders have complex communication needs and may benefit from the use of augmentative and alternative communication. However, there is a lack of research examining the specific communication needs of these adults, let alone the outcomes of interventions aimed at addressing them. The aim of this study was to explore the views and experiences of support workers ...

The use of augmentative and alternative communication methods with infants and toddlers with disabilities: a research review.

This review sought to determine the evidence base of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) use with infants and toddlers with disabilities. The review identified 12 studies, involving 190 participants aged 36 months or younger. The majority of the studies investigated unaided AAC methods (e.g., gestures or sign language), with 42% of the studies also including aided AAC methods. Alth...
